Parking Enforcement Officer I is the entry-level class of this uniformed law enforcement support series. This class does not perform Peace Officer duties, have legal standing as a sworn law enforcement officer, nor render other general police services. Initially under close supervision, incumbents learn and develop knowledge of responding to public inquiries, assigned geographic work locations, citation equipment and procedures, parking enforcement practices, laws and records requirements.
Parking Enforcement Officer II is the journey-level class of this series, fully competent to independently perform a variety of responsible parking enforcement and services related functions of the position. This class may provide training and functional supervision to newly appointed employees to the Parking Enforcement Officer I class. This level may also have responsibility for some centralized and specialized functions of the series, including but not limited to maintenance of parking enforcement supplies; central files maintenance; preparation of support materials and files as need by the Parking Authority; assist with development of temporary changes in parking and traffic circulation at county facilities related to construction and special events; liaison to the Public Works Department in relation to county roads, streets and facility parking issues; assistance to Deputy Sheriffs with specific non-sworn services; and support and assistance with medical response programs, supplies and training.
The physical demands and work environment described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential duties of this job. Incumbents in this classification must have the hand and foot coordination to operate a three or four-wheel Parking Enforcement vehicle with a manual or automatic transmission in the course of their duties and may be required to do significant amounts of walking. Incumbents must have strength, flexibility, and coordination to repeatedly climb in and out of a parking enforcement vehicle and to use chalk to mark parked vehicles while driving the parking enforcement vehicle or walking. Incumbents must have the manual dexterity to hand print parking citations and operate a handheld citation computer. The handheld citation computer is carried throughout the shift. Repetitive hand and arm movement is required to produce citations, place completed citations on the windshield of parked vehicles, mark tires, and direct traffic. Incumbents of the classification must have speech and hearing ability sufficient to communicate effectively in person, on the telephone and over two-way radio equipment. Field work is performed out of doors, in all weather conditions, and includes evening, weekend and certain holiday shifts.
