Longevity pay $1500 after 5 years and $2000 after 7 years. Police

Officers receive additional $1,500 upon successful completion of Field Training Officer course. Police Officers receive $3,000 sign on bonus if employed with police department for 3 years.

*This police officer position is grant-funded. Therefore, the duration of this position is subject to the guidelines of the grant. (COPS)

SUMMARY

The Police Officer patrols the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians' jurisdiction to protect life and property, to prevent and deter crime, enforce laws, respond to citizen requests for assistance and perform investigations. The Grand Traverse Band's jurisdiction includes lands in six counties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Take charge of all crime scenes and processes seen as appropriate.
  • Report to work promptly as scheduled by supervisor.
  • Prepare weekly timesheets, daily reports, and incident reports and submit them to supervisor in a timely manner.
  • Perform community policing duties and setting up neighborhood watch groups.
  • Interact with all tribal government departments and community members to address Community concerns and needs to be addressed by tribal police.
  • Participate in and attend community member events put on by GTB housing or other departments to improve public safety concerns.
  • Tribal police will interact with community members during patrols to establish positive safety relations.
  • Attend all staff and Tribal Council meetings as requested or mandated.
  • Investigate all citizen complaints, violations and issue citations or warnings when appropriate.
  • Service all warrants and other court processes without undue delay as directed by Tribal, State and Federal Court.
  • Enforce tribal criminal and civil laws, ordinances to include civil traffic laws, United States Codes or 24 CFR.
  • Make arrests for all violations of State, Federal and Tribal law violations.
  • Process offenders in and out of county jails, state prisons and federal prisons.
  • Testify in State, Federal and Tribal Court in all cases.
  • Process Sex Offender Registry and Notification Act requirements.
  • Must have ability to support community-oriented policing and special event activities and/or projects or grant requirements as assigned.
  • Attend all appropriate training sessions as required.
  • Maintain equipment issued.
  • Carry a cell phone during work shift to answer phone calls. This does not apply while on vacation, personal day, sick day and medical leave.
  • Participate in educational prevention programs in collaboration with CTAS PA-05
  • Other duties may be assigned.
  • Accomplish tasks, goals, and duties of assigned grant:
  • Attend DOJ mandated meetings and trainings for community policing.
  • Convene four (4) Neighborhood Watch community groups to focus on identifying and prioritizing community concerns and strategizing solution to improve community partnerships and information exchange.
  • Work with local committees and advisory groups to represent law enforcement, share information and problem solve for community policing.
  • Renew annual communication systems licenses.
  • Create and maintain a GTB law enforcement website to provide crime prevention tips, updates to Neighborhood Watch activities and resources available to reduce crime.
  • Utilize community-based kiosks to improve community access to data and information.
  • Increase community patrols to enhance law enforcement community presence.
  • Implement community police strategies in law enforcement department to reduce and prevent crime and work collaboratively with community members to address and solve crime.
  • Collect data by number of participants attending Neighborhood Watch programs, number of community issues identified each month, calls for response in outlying areas, crimes solved, and partnerships formed.

  • Must be able to resolve problems, conflicts and maintain high morale and professionalism within the communities.
  • Must be able to prepare cases for court presentation.
  • Attend all staff and Tribal Council meetings as requested and/or mandated.
  • Must have written skills that are clear, concise, and professional.
  • Must have oral communication skills that are clear, concise and understandable or adaptable for the situation.
  • Ability to understand the culture of Native American people, its history, present, and the future culture.
  • Ability to work with any law enforcement software system.
  • Computer literacy required.
  • Must be able to do simple math problems.

QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Must be at least 21 Years of Age at the time of hire
  • High School diploma required, Associates Degree preferred in law enforcement, criminal justice, corrections or related field.
  • One-year prior experience working in a law enforcement setting preferred.
  • Must be certified or certifiable by Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards Certification (MCOLES) required.
  • Must obtain and maintain a BIA (Special Law Enforcement Commission)
  • Must become LEIN certified
  • Must complete Field Training Officer (FTO) Program for continuation of employment.
  • Must be thoroughly familiar with all applicable policies and procedures, Federal Regulations, GTB Tribal Police Department Policies and Procedures, Tribal and State Criminal Codes, Children's Code, Tribal Constitution, Michigan Motor Vehicle, GTB Personnel Policy, Police Department Organic Resolution and Code, and all other applicable rules, regulations and statutes.

DRIVING REQUIREMENTS

Must have and maintain a valid driver's license and be insurable by the GTB insurance carrier.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Must be able to travel throughout the state of Michigan or other states when required.
  • Must be in full uniform or the uniform of the day as mandated by supervisor.
  • Must maintain all equipment issued and clean cars after each shift or patrol if necessary.
  • Must qualify semi-annually with duty firearm.
  • Must attend a minimum of forty (40) hours of local in-service training annually.
  • Must be able to restrain, pursue (on foot) offenders.
  • Must be able to assist in medical emergencies or rescue efforts.
  • Must maintain and be in excellent physical condition.

TYPICAL MENTAL DEMANDS

Must have a demonstrated ability to positively deal with stress. Must be able to make quick decisions, with limited information under extremely tense pressures.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Work outside in all weather conditions when applicable.
  • Law Enforcement offices and vehicles are climate controlled.
  • All entrances to the law enforcement department are monitored.
  • Must be able to work days, evenings, weekends and holidays when required.
  • Must be able to work in an element of danger when required.
  • Must be able to work in an office setting when required.

COMMENT

Native American Preference will apply. Must pass an extensive federal criminal background check. Any Giglio-Brady issues will disqualify applicants. Must not have any questionable dispositions with or been convicted of felonies or serious misdemeanors. Drug and alcohol urinalysis as a condition of employment. Must pass any written and/or psychological exams. Must have a reputation above reproach and a great work experience that demonstrates a positive work ethic. Adherence to strict company policy regarding confidentiality is a must. Must have a demonstrated interest, pursuit and goal to be a law enforcement officer.
