Description
The Spanish Telephone-Interpreter is responsible for handling calls on demand, and renders the meaning of conversations between Spanish and English speakers.
The Spanish Translator coordinator will assist in the scheduling of interpreters in response to client needs, and will support all aspects of translation projects. They respond to the customer service needs and play a key role in ensuring we fulfill the expectations of our customers. They support various parts of the business and the day-to-day operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Translate and Interpret for multiple divisions/agencies internal or external.
- Meet IDOH and MCH standards to exceed needs in customer service and interpreting skills.
- Maintain professionalism.
- Advocate for LEP clients when necessary.
- Maintain strict confidentiality of translations and interpretations.
- Maintain a flexible daily schedule and be available during non-traditional work hours and days.
- Communicate effectively with requestors and staff to ensure all needs are met.
- Participate in other opportunities applicable to support translation and interpretation efforts.
- Translator/Interpreter - Attend meetings, conferences or events if needed to support our department.
- Translator - Reads or listens to material in original language, determines the understanding of the meaning and context of that material, and converts it into a second language, making sure to preserve the original meaning.
- Translator - Proofread translations.
- Complete translation requests from different programs in the IDOH agency. Requests include brochures, flyers, program literature, articles, authorizations forms, consent forms, legal documents, provider and client letters, and direct requests from the State Health Commissioner’s office.
- Relay concepts and ideas between languages.
- Use special dictionaries, glossaries, and websites for reference. Research as necessary to understand all terminology.
- Use appropriate software for delivery and presentation.
- Consult with experts in specialized areas.
- Assist the front desk with interpretation requests for visitors.
- Lead three way calls for any staff in MCH division and/or ISDH.
- Attend community events to provide interpretation services as well as necessary document translation and sight translations.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
- Bachelor’s degree or a minimum of 2+ years of experience translating.
- Completion of 40-hour Interpreting Training such as Bridging the Gap.
- ATA Certification preferred.
- CMI or CCHI Certification preferred.
- Native Spanish speaker level.
- Native Spanish grammar level. Must be able to navigate almost any document in both languages, English and Spanish. Must be able to communicate in both languages spontaneously. Be capable of writing without any errors.
- Fluent in English and Spanish.
- Able to communicate professionally verbally and in writing.
- Industry specific knowledge.
- Demonstrate Interpreting/Translating abilities.
- Culturally Competent.
- Strong communication skills.
- High level of discretion and confidentiality.
- Must be able to work with limited supervision.
- Must be able to interpret/translate assignments without bias.
- Strong stress management.
- Must be able to sit for long periods of time.
- Capable of reading long documents with attention to detail in order to provide accurate proofreadings.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to convey information effectively to both professionals and the public.
- Must complete a proficiency test to determine the language proficiency in knowledge of grammar, vocabulary, and syntax, among other things.
- Comprehension and domain of vocabulary in distinct registers, including jargon and acronyms. Must be familiar with idiomatic expressions and slangs.
- Skills in using Microsoft Office.
- Exemplary customer service skills.
- Ability to work as a team member and take direction, as well as the ability to take responsibility and make decisions.
- Excellent office skills and computer knowledge.
- Ability to comprehend oral and written directions, express ideas clearly and convey information.
- Able to handle multiple tasks and projects.
- Must be able to work flexible work hours/days.
- Willing to work evenings, and weekends.
- Must be motivated to independently initiate and perform job duties.
- Must be able to assist in other duties, tasks, and projects as assigned.
