DESCRIPTION

The mission of the Student Health & Well-Being (SHW) cluster is to promote a culture of health and well-being for the student community, deliver equitable high quality innovative services, incorporate inclusive approaches, and celebrate diversity, with the goal of adoption and maintenance of healthy behaviors contributing to the academic success and personal development of all students.

The Student Health and Well-being cluster of the UC San Diego, which reports through UC San Diego Health System, plays a leadership role in creating a strong and active well-being culture that enables all students to flourish in body, mind and spirit. Under the oversight of the executive director, the SHW cluster includes the departments of Student Health Services (SHS), Health Promotion Services (HPS), Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) and SHW Administration.

CAPS delivers campus-based mental health services to over 43,000 registered UCSD undergraduate, graduate, and professional school students. CAPS' multicultural, multidisciplinary, and student-centered staff strives to deliver trauma informed, culturally proficient counseling and psychiatric services, psycho-educational preventive outreach and early intervention programming, consultation, research, and training opportunities.

In collaboration with Student Affairs and Academic Affairs, CAPS services support the academic mission of the University aimed at student success, retention and well-being, and works toward the maintenance of a just, inclusive and healthy living and learning environment for individuals to flourish as they pursue their academic, career, and personal goals. CAPS is accredited by the International Accreditation of Counseling Services (IACS) and the Post-doctoral Resident Training Program is affiliated with the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Center (APPIC). CAPS is fully committed to self-examination, peer review, and quality improvement through the utilization of metrics, data, clinical outcomes, client experience measurements and feedback.

UC San Diego Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), is seeking a Sport Psychologist, who will be embedded in UC San Diego Intercollegiate Athletics (ICA), an NCAA Division 1 program. CAPS is seeking to develop the holistic growth of the Scholar-Athletes in their striving towards excellence. This position will support the coordination efforts between CAPS and ICA, including coordination of the Sport Psychology and Outreach Response Team (SPORT) program, a collaborative effort between both departments to foster optimal athletic and academic performance, as well as the mental health and well-being of the Scholar-Athlete. The position also entails supporting coordination of case management efforts for Scholar-Athletes of concern, outreach to teams and staff, and training of ICA staff and coaches on best practices in fostering optimal performance and well-being of the Scholar-Athlete through assessment, action, and referrals to appropriate resources.

This job involves culturally proficient individual and group clinical mental health services for scholar-athletes, the delivery of preventive and early intervention psychoeducational outreach, as well as engagement with coaches, administrators, sports medicine, and athletic department staff to best support Scholar-Athletes in their strivings for peak performance and flourishing as human beings. The job also involves supporting the development and coordination of mental health/wellbeing components of this vital and evolving program through the design, execution, and evaluation of psychoeducational programming for the Athletic Department. Formal Sport Psychology training/certification and experience are required. Also participates in after hours, on-call, and urgent care coverage. Incumbent also provides clinical supervision and training of CAPS Post-doctoral Residents and maintains quality assurance and improvement in compliance standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Doctorate degree. from an accredited program in Clinical or Counseling psychology.

  • Formal Sport Psychology education, training, and/or certification.

  • Unrestricted California license to practice psychology. (Out of state licensed within 180 days.)

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.

  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of clinical counseling principles, methods, procedures, and standards.

  • Demonstrated experience and expertise in the practice of Sports Psychology. Ability to coordinate care for and education about mental health related issues for the Scholar-Athlete grounded on sport psychology principles and NCAA best practice guidelines.

  • Demonstrated expertise working with under-served college students and young adults, including proven success addressing their social/ecological and psychological experiences and dynamics on campus to foster their matriculation and academic achievements.

  • Ability to work in a highly collaborative manner with a diverse client group. Demonstrated ability to conduct culturally proficient and focused individual, conjoint, couples, family counseling and sport psychology and trauma-informed services, as well crisis intervention at an individual and community level.

  • Ability to relate warmly, humanely, sensitively and empathetically to others. Demonstrated ability to actively foster a positive, welcoming climate, and value, include and support all in the UC San Diego community

  • Demonstrated skill in effectively managing mental health emergencies

  • Ability to evaluate the progress of therapeutic approach and modify as necessary.

  • Ability to develop and present educational programs and / or workshops. Proven ability to develop and implement effective culturally responsive outreach programs and provide consultation, mental health promotion, and preventative psycho-educational outreach services.

  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion to foster the best possible working and learning environment

  • Knowledge of clinical supervision, organizational consulting techniques, systems and community psychology models and approaches with demonstrated skills in consultation work with professional and non-professional colleagues

  • Demonstrated commitment and ability to acknowledge, advocate and support the efforts to dismantle structural racism and divisive biases based on race, ethnicity, sex, gender identity, age, disability, sexual orientation, religion, and political beliefs

  • Highly effective problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.

  • Highly effective verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Thorough knowledge of legal and ethical issues related to patients' rights.

  • Knowledge of business software and specialized applications / systems used in behavioral health settings. Working knowledge of electronic medical/mental health records systems (EMR or EHR).

  • Ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality of client, students, faculty, and staff disclosures, and comply with all requirements in use of computer systems and access to any and all patient, student, employee and University data, in electronic and hard copy formats, in compliance with University, state and federal guidelines, including, but not limited to Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)

  • At all times, demonstrate the characteristics of professionalism in attire, attitude, conversation, behavior and attentiveness to others. All staff members are required to uphold the UCSD Principles of Community and to promote a positive and collaborative team environment. Ability to adhere to and practice the mandatory University Core Values & Safety Standards of performance. Ability to at all times adhere to UCSD Health Medical Center (C.A.R.I.N.G.) Standards of Performance as applicable to position.

  • Must complete all required training assigned by UCOP, UCSD and SHW/CAPS on a timely basis

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • University Counseling Center experience preferred.

  • Bilingual Preferred. Language Proficiency required to provide clinical care in a language other than English.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Must work some evenings, weekends, holidays for after-hours emergency coverage rotation.

  • Various work locations, if needed and deemed necessary by the department.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $95,195 - $165,745 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $45.59 - $79.38

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
