JOB DUTIES

SUMMARY BACKGROUND

You will lead your team in kennel operations, animal care, and team development enriching and saving the lives of homeless animals in the Four Corners Area. ESSENTIAL DUTIES

The Animal Care Manager is responsible for monitoring and organizing the productivity, accuracy, and workflow of high-quality animal care and overall output of the department.

The Animal Care Manager ensures an environment of compassionate and respectful animal care and people care in accordance with FRAS' mission, values, and goals.

Directs staff and ensures that the animal care department operates in a coordinated, efficient, and effective manger in all aspects, ensuring high quality standards of animal care, handling, and sanitation. Ensures that staff performance is consistent with protocols.

Ensures that animals are fed according to dietary instruction; cleaning and disinfecting of animal enclosures, dishes and other equipment used; completion of laundry duties; flow and movement of the animal population. Ensures equipment is maintained in proper working condition.

Manages payroll, scheduling, recruitment and personnel matter for animal care staff.

Coaches staff by providing ongoing feedback and timely performance evaluations. Recognizes good performance and takes action to direct staff to correct problems.

Maintains shelter facility areas in a clean, neat, and orderly manner.

Monitors and reports facility concerns and improvement requests.

Regularly evaluates department policies and procedures and updates as needed.

Ensures all training manuals, checklists, procedures, and tests are up to date.

Serves as manager on duty on a rotating basis with other managers.

In conjunction with the Veterinarian and Director of Animal Welfare, reviews SOPs and Euthanasia Protocol to keep up to date with current industry best practices and FRAS philosophy; trains staff in the euthanasia process, and performs euthanasia as needed. Must obtain a Euthanasia Instructor license and Euthanasia Technician License through the state of New Mexico.

Solicits employee input regarding their work and workplace.

Works cohesively with all departments of the City and organization to ensure operational excellence.

Work cooperatively with all volunteers, recognizing the talent and commitment they bring to the organization.

Operates a motor vehicle to assist in carrying out the business of the department and the City.

Attendance at work is an essential function of this position.

NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Demonstrate knowledge of and adherence to FRAS policies and procedures.

Ensure a safe work environment, follow all safety guidelines, and model safe work practices.

Take immediate action to address any safety concerns that could put a staff member, volunteer, customer, animal or the organization at risk.

Follow direction of the Animal Welfare Director and Veterinarian.

QUALIFICATIONS

This position is subject to the City of Farmington's Drug and Alcohol Testing Policy which includes: pre-employment testing, post-accident testing, random testing, reasonable suspicion testing, return to duty testing, and follow-up testing.

Extensive background checks required.

Associate degree required; bachelor's preferred.

Valid New Mexico driver's license with acceptable driving record for the past three years or state of current residency.

Knowledge Skills Abilities should demonstrate practiced animal care.

Responsible pet ownership, positive communication methods and supervisory experience.

Modern office practices, methods and computer equipment; principles and procedures or record keeping.

Two (2) years' experience with animal welfare, animal control or veterinary services is preferred.

Must be able to obtain Euthanasia Certification within one year of date of hire.

Strong organization planning skills. Must be able to schedule and communicate with a large team with varied schedules.

Excellent interpersonal skills in dealing with public and staff; principals and supervision and teambuilding.

Ability to receive money and make proper change.

Ability to cope emotionally with euthanasia.

Ability to manage kennel operations independently in a fast-paced environment.

Ability to manage multiple situations simultaneously.

One (1) year supervisory experience.

Strong problem-solving skills and Team-building skills.

Knowledge of and concern with animals.

Ability to work all shifts, including weekends and holidays.

Commitment to mission, values, goals and success of the FRAS with compassion and genuine affection for animals.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, peers, supervisors and the public.

Ability to work under stress and handle stressful situations.

Ability to meet deadlines.

Ability to exercise sound judgment in evaluating situations and in making decisions.

Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.

This position has the responsibility to participate in and comply with the City's Environmental, Health, and Safety program.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

Animal capture equipment, police radio, first aid equipment, catch poles, leashes, gloves and ropes to handle animals, cleaning materials in shelter maintenance.
